Keeping important documents safe

When travelling from A to B, many keep all of their important documents to hand to ensure nothing gets misplaced, but when transporting goods from the car to your new home, these papers can easily get caught among boxes. To ensure that all of your important items and documents such as your passport and driving license remain safe and intact, put them into a smaller, box or a file to save things getting mixed up.

Create a moving day survival kit

It’s a great idea to create a moving day survival kit the week before your move. You can put everything you might need for the first day at your new home in it, here are few suggestions you might find useful for your moving day:

  • Kettle
  • Tea/coffee
  • Bottled water
  • Bed linen
  • Phone/laptop chargers
  • A towel
  • Scissors
  • Torch
  • Pen and paper
  • A screwdriver or small toolkit

Alongside your moving day survival kit, you should pack an overnight bag containing clothes you need for the following day, including basic toiletries to get you through the first night so you don’t have to rush into unpacking.

Finish packing

The days before you move home will go by quicker than you expect, making it important to pack as much as you can beforehand. Not only will this help ensure that you have everything ready to go, but you can separate your belongings according to room. By doing so, when you arrive at your new home, you can place each box inside the correct room without having to double check what’s inside. No one wants to spend hours sifting through countless boxes; packing in advance helps you save valuable time and arm ache as well!

Collecting your new keys

The week before you have planned to move house, organise a suitable time to collect your new keys. When arranging the time, consider when you would like to leave your home on moving day and when you hope to arrive at your new property, factoring in the journey time and potential traffic. Sometimes the unexpected happens, which is why many movers create plenty of space between leaving home and arriving at their new property. A little extra caution is never a bad thing after all.

Return borrowed items

When you move house, it’s likely that you will find several things you borrowed, from tools and utensils, to a book you really wanted to read but never had a chance to. To ensure your new home doesn’t become cluttered, return these borrowed items as soon as you get the chance. Not only will this help ensure that everything you transport to your new home will be used, but you can also avoid those awkward ‘did you find my…’ questions at your house warming.
