Conquering Culture Shock: Tips to Thrive in Your New Home Abroad

Table of Contents

At Santa Fe, we understand the excitement and butterflies that come with moving abroad. Embracing a new culture is an incredible adventure, but it’s also normal to feel a little lost at first. It is important to remember that there are others who are in the same boat and feel the same as you do!

Here are our top 5 tips to help you overcome the fear of living in a new country and start thriving in your exciting new home:

1. Embrace the Unknown (with a Little Planning):

While spontaneity is great, a little research goes a long way. Learn as much of the local language as you can, research customs and etiquette, and familiarise yourself with the transportation system. This foundation will ease daily life and build confidence.

2. Connect with Your Community:

Feeling lonely is a common fear. Seek out expat groups online via Facebook or in your neighbourhood. Join clubs or classes related to your hobbies to meet people who share your interests. Don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with locals – most people appreciate your effort to connect! Being around people who can lend an open ear to your worries can help lessen the feeling of being homesick.

3. Learn the Lingo:

Even basic language skills open doors. Invest in a language learning app or course before. We asked a group of Expats who moved to France, what is one thing you wish you knew before relocating. The majority of them said that they wish they learnt more of the language, beyond the basics, before they moved. Locals will be more welcoming if you try to communicate in their tongue, and you’ll feel more confident navigating daily life.

It also would be a good idea to learn about any rules that need to be respected in your new destination (e.g. dressing modestly in Dubai), so you do not come across any issues.

4. Celebrate the Differences:

Embrace the unique aspects of your new culture! Try unfamiliar foods, explore local traditions, and visit historical sites. Stepping outside your comfort zone fosters growth and creates lasting memories.

5. Stay Connected (But Don’t Compare):

Hearing a loved one’s voice is comforting and can help with homesickness (in some ways). However, avoid dwelling on what you miss, that will not help! Focus on the positive experiences you’re having abroad and why you have moved, and remember, your hometown will always be there to visit!

Relocating abroad and settling in is a lengthy process, be patient with yourself! Adjusting and finding a new routine that works for you takes time. Celebrate your small victories and remember, every challenge you overcome makes you more confident and more adaptable.

Santa Fe is here to support you on your expat journey. We offer a variety of resources and services to help you settle in and make the most of your new adventure.
